Professional Development Framework
For me, as a DBA leader, I have discovered that the personal effectiveness and professional identity domain for the professional development framework has spurred much personal development. I have come to understand that being effective is as much about doing the right things as it is about doing things right, and how that is done, how people communicate, and how I present myself professionally in large organizations. I’m working on emotional Intelligence, Executive Communication, and strategic leadership in my current role, and it has also helped me perform better under stress. Skills are vital to transfer from a high-performing practitioner to a leader who will be influential in achieving sustainable change. I see strong potential here. It gives a structure to the approach for the identification of gaps and creates measurable objectives.
I have chosen three subdomains to develop my personal effectiveness and professional identity further: professional presence and executive communication, strategic leadership and influence, and self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Selected subdomains are connected with long-term career aspirations and expectations related to a DBA working in a high-stakes, complex environment. Executive communication is very important because, as leaders, they need to translate information to a simple level, make clear, persuasive arguments, and establish trust and drive action. It’s also crucial to develop strategic leadership and influence as these qualities facilitate moving organisations through change and aligning teams with vision. Understanding oneself and EQ is crucial when working effectively under stress and in establishing trust with other people and stakeholders. Subdomains: Merged subdomains enable transition to a leader who can analyse problems and mobilise resources and people to reach strategic objectives.
Having specific measurable goals in order to make progress in selected subdomains. Professional presence and executive communication include motivating senior stakeholders with presentations with minimal or no note-taking and consistently relevant and credible professional verbal and non-verbal communication. Strategic leadership and influence: Planning and execution of the project with strategic leadership and measurable outcomes; Influencing decision-making within the organisation through the use of data and setting up stakeholders. Self-awareness and emotional intelligence: emotionally dealing with pressure situations; developing coaching skills – listening and being empathetic. Measurable outcomes will be determined by performance feedback, progress tracking, and responses to leadership opportunities that are acquired.
My approach to achieving these goals is through structured practice, mentorship, and formal learning. I will attend executive communication and strategic decision-making classes and look for and locate senior leaders who can help mentor, guide, and provide feedback. Other activities include proactively looking for professional forum opportunities and being provided leadership opportunities for cross-functional projects to gain hands-on experience. Reflective practice will continue to be a key part of the plan, and progress will be monitored using a journal to look for trends and modify interventions. Motivation to be supported with weekly milestones, a small wins approach, and accountability through regular progress updates to mentors and peers. Motivation is maintained by having goals that relate to long-term purpose; by having a vision of progress, and it being recognised.
Resilience continues to be a key aspect of this domain, as DBA leaders continue to need to be productive amidst stressful, demanding situations. To increase resilience, I will include: stress management, use of mindfulness, and setting times and boundaries. It will help you to give you some perspective and encouragement through a group of peers and mentors in difficult times. Learning from failure, treating failure as an opportunity, and having a growth mindset also help to build resilience. These strategies will work towards achieving ongoing performance and promoting overall well-being.
I have been discussing with my peers and mentors in my informal network the framework that has helped to build on objectives and gain buy-in to the plan. Sharing the development plan enabled me to get feedback, discover areas that I hadn’t noticed, and receive encouragement. Overall, the Professional Development Framework has transformed my mind and perception of myself from a doer to a leader, an influencer, and a resiliencer. This reflection has empowered and provided a framework for the development of the next generation of DBAs to whom change and difference can be made possible.
